Virus Hoax listings
For
"sulfnbk.exe" virus hoax information:
A
hoax about this file being infected with a virus is making the e-mail rounds
again. The hoax says to look for the sulfnbk.exe file and claims that, if
you have it on your computer, its infected with a virus. ALL Windows
98/98SE/ME computers have this file, its a regular Windows system file.
While its possible that yours is infected, it's probably fine.
"Is
my file infected?"
1)
If you have anti-virus software on your computer, update the virus
definitions and then do a full system virus check. If sulfnbk.exe or
any other file is infected, this will tell you. If your computer has no
viruses, relax. If the software DOES find a virus, follow the instructions
in your anti-virus software to fix it.
-
or -
Use
the "find" or "search" utility (click "start",
then "find" on Windows 98 or "search" on Windows ME) to find
your sulfnbk.exe file. Right-click on the file name to get a list
of options, left-click on the option to scan for viruses (if you have
this option, the wording may be different) and you can just scan this specific
file.
2)
If you do NOT have anti-virus software on your computer (a big mistake in
today's on-line world) you can still check to see if you have a virus.
Click this
link to go to Symantec Corporation's free virus detection program. It
takes a little while to load, since it has to install an application and then
scan all your files, but it does a thorough and accurate job. NOTE:
This software will detect a virus but not treat it. After all, this
company sells anti-virus software (they make Norton Anti-Virus, widely
considered the best, BTW).
"How
do I get the non-infected file back?"
If
you followed the hoax instructions and deleted the file then emptied your
Recycling Bin, you deleted a file that is not essential for Windows operation
but that you should have on your computer. To get the file back you'll
need to download a new copy.
a)
Right-click on the link below, then left-click on the option "save target
as". That command will open a box called "save as" which
shows you drives, folders and files on your computer.
b)
At the top of the box click the arrow by the words "save in" and then
click the rectangle icon next to "(C:)" (that's your "C"
drive)
c)
Staying in that "save in" box, double-click on the manila folder icon
called "Windows", then to the manila folder icon called
"command".
d)
Once you've navigated to the "command" folder, just left-click the
command "save" above the cancel command. That's it. The
file's back and its fine. It's not hard.
